Deck Staining & Sealing Done Right

A lakeside deck takes sun, foot traffic, and shoreline humidity all season. We strip the dead grey, brighten the grain, and seal it with a penetrating stain that sheds water and holds its color.

One Company That Cleans Then Stains

Most homeowners around Greers Ferry Lake end up hiring two outfits — one to clean the deck and another to stain it — and the timing never lines up. We do both, in the right order, in one visit. Because we're a soft-wash company first, the cleaning and prep are the part we already do better than anyone, and that's the part that decides whether your stain lasts one season or five.

A neglected deck on the lake turns silver-grey as the surface fibers oxidize and die. Stain won't bond to that dead layer — it just sits on top and flakes off. We strip it back to sound wood, kill the mildew that lake humidity breeds, brighten the grain with a wood brightener, then apply a penetrating stain matched to your boards. The result soaks in, sheds water, and wears evenly instead of peeling.

This page is part of our staining and sealing services. If your deck just needs a wash and you're not ready to stain yet, start with deck and fence cleaning.

Decks We Stain & Seal

Floors, rails, stairs, and the structure under them — the whole deck, treated as one.

Deck Boards & Floors

The walking surface takes the worst of the sun and traffic. We strip, brighten, and stain it for even color and a water-shedding finish.

Railings & Balusters

All those vertical surfaces are tedious and easy to half-do. We coat every face and edge so the rails match the floor.

Stairs & Landings

Deck stairs see heavy wear and standing water. We give treads and stringers extra attention so they don't fail first.

Pergolas & Covers

Attached pergolas, arbors, and covered sections get stained to match so the whole outdoor space reads as one.

Multi-Level Lake Decks

Tiered decks stepping down toward the water are common here. We coordinate color and coverage across every level.

Wash-and-Stain Combo

Because we clean and stain, you book it once. The prep is done right and the stain goes on a properly prepared surface.

Strip, Brighten, Stain, Seal

1

Strip & Clean

Remove the failing finish, dirt, and lake mildew with the right chemistry and gentle pressure for the wood.

2

Brighten the Grain

Neutralize and brighten oxidized, greyed fibers so the wood opens up and takes stain evenly everywhere.

3

Let It Dry

Wood has to reach the right moisture level before staining. We wait for it instead of rushing the coat on wet boards.

4

Stain & Seal

Apply a penetrating stain and sealer matched to your deck and the lake climate, with full coverage and clean edges.

Deck Staining FAQs

Why does my deck need cleaning before staining?

Exposed lake-area wood develops a grey, oxidized surface layer plus mildew that stain can't bond to. We strip and brighten it back to sound, open wood first — that prep is the single biggest factor in how long the stain lasts.

Stain or seal — what's the difference?

A sealer protects and sheds water but adds little color. A stain does both: it tints the wood and protects it. For most lakeside decks we use a penetrating stain that seals as it colors.

How often should a lake deck be re-stained?

It depends on sun exposure and traffic, but full-sun decks on the water generally need attention every couple of years. We'll tell you honestly whether yours needs a full strip or just a maintenance coat.

Do you stain composite decking?

Composite boards don't take stain the way real wood does, but the wood railings, posts, and structure around them often do. Send photos and we'll tell you exactly what's stainable.
